Under Clause F4 (Safety from Falling), a compliant balustrade or barrier is legally required on any deck, balcony, patio, or retaining wall where a person could fall 1m or more onto a lower surface. This height is measured vertically from the floor of the deck to the ground below.

Even if your deck falls just below the 1-metre threshold (for instance, 800mm off the ground), installing a barrier is often still recommended for peace of mind, particularly for homes with young children or elderly visitors. Key compliance standards to keep in mind include:

• Minimum Height: Residential deck balustrades must generally measure at least 1000mm (1 metre) in height from the finished deck floor.
• Sphere Test: Gaps between vertical balusters, slats, or under bottom rails must be small enough that a 100mm sphere cannot pass through.
• Climbability: To prevent children from climbing, barriers cannot feature horizontal rails or foot-holds between 150mm and 760mm above floor level.

Selecting the right material comes down to balancing your budget, desired privacy, views, and long-term upkeep.

• Powder-Coated Aluminium: Highly durable, rust-proof, and lightweight. Aluminium is available in vertical baluster, louvre, or horizontal slat profiles. It handles harsh coastal environments brilliantly and requires very little maintenance beyond a simple rinse.
• Glass Systems (Frameless or Post-Supported): Ideal for preserving uninterrupted views and blocking cold breezes. Modern systems use toughened safety glass or laminated safety glass. While exceptionally durable, glass shows water spots and salt residue more readily than aluminium.

  • Both materials require minimal upkeep. Powder-coated aluminium simply needs a wash down with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush every 3 to 6 months to remove salt and dirt. Glass balustrades require regular cleaning with standard glass cleaner or a water/vinegar solution to keep the panels crystal clear and free from water spots or salt haze.
• How do I know if I need a balustrade on my deck or balcony?
