A Guide to Gate Automation for New Zealand Homes

Automation options by Warner Fencing and Gates.

True luxury lies in the seamless intersection of security, architectural style, and smart technology. When you arrive home at the end of a long day, there is no denying the good feeling of watching a bespoke driveway gate effortlessly glide open before you. It’s welcoming, it’s convenient, it feels secure, and it’s a real relief when it’s raining outside!
At Warner, we aim to combine Kiwi ingenuity with premium local manufacturing. That means we aren’t constrained by a one-size-fits-all approach; instead, we deliver tailored architectural solutions that add measurable value and security to your property – and automation is just one part of that process.

What kinds of gate automation are available in New Zealand?

Motors are the first stop in an automation journey – from ghost motors hidden from sight, to swing or sliding motors, and even the more complex kaleidoscope and cantilever-style openings.
For most residential applications, swing or sliding motors are the right fit. A sliding gate works well for driveways where steep access points make a swing gate difficult. Sliding gates also offer maximum use of the driveway space.

Swing gates work for long driveways with little boundary line area to work with at the access point, and are also favoured for wide openings where double swing motors quickly make the driveway accessible.

Your local Warner team can advise on the type of automation motor that would best suit your needs, budget and property. There are many creative ways to go about designing a bespoke solution for your home, and our sales team visit so many residential and commercial spaces on a weekly basis – they have no doubt encountered a solution that will work for a property like yours.

After you’ve confirmed which way your gate will open, you need to consider how you want to get in! Keypads, intercoms and remotes are the most common means of access – but there are several more ways to automate the opening process. We install vehicle loop detectors, weight plates, and phone call entry systems (yes, you can literally ring your gate) – automation has come leaps and bounds in recent years, and we’ve been keeping up with every innovation. Our clients come to us looking for innovative ideas, and our team is continuously designing solutions that are not only fit for purpose but are truly inspiring.

How safe is gate automation?

There are safety mechanisms we strongly suggest installing when adding automation to your home – most notably the Photocell sensors, which stop gates from closing when there is something interrupting the beam. They bring a real peace of mind to the addition of automation.
To guarantee absolute precision and longevity, Warner uses the world-class Italian brand DEA for our automation motors. DEA is known for their robust metal gearboxes and craftsman quality. Recently, we have begun to also work with Cardin motors in some of our projects. Cardin is another renowned Italian manufacturer of automation systems, part of the Riello Elettronica Group. By only working with select brands that our team is trained in, and whose quality we can fully get behind, the Warner team can stand by the work we do, knowing it is designed and installed to the highest safety standards.
